This review is about all of Mongolia not just the festival. I enjoyed a truly great time. The Naadam Festival was the centrepiece but the friendly people, their love and care for the horses, cows, camels etc they own, the vast countryside, the modern centre of Ulaanbaatar with shopping malls that have all the big names you would find in the Dubai Mall, the dominating Chinggis Khann monument in Terelj Park, and communist-lite nature of this great nation is equally worth commenting on. The festival had a lively opening ceremony and firework dramatic closing ceremony. The national anthem appeared to be played in rock-style way but everyone stood respectfully nonetheless...

We did a 7-night tour that was semi-tailor made for us. My wife and I. Mainly because the dates were what I asked for and not scheduled. It was based around central Mongolia. Right from the start Shinee, my contact, was very friendly and helpful prior to the tour, and from what I hear from the guide, during our tour as well. Our guide, Dashker, and our driver Zulaa were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. We were due to stay in GER camps for 4 nights, and in a tourist GER. Ends up, we got upgraded for 3 of those nights. We did the tour at the beginning of May when there were hardly any tourists around. So, no crowds. We virtually had the camps all to ourselves. In fact, one of the camps opened up especially for us for the night. The visits included Ugii lake, Orkhon river and waterfall...

Zaya was very communicative and helpful in putting the itinerary together, and my guide, Oyuna, was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, sharing fascinating insights into Mongolian culture and history. Zaya was incredibly responsive to all of our emails and questions (we had a lot!), and helped us make our own customized 6 day itinerary based on our time frame and interests. Even though it wasn't officially part of our tour, she went out of her way to find us Naadam tickets from a secondary source when they became scarcely available.

I took the Discover Mongolia Tour (14 Days) and added 3 additional days (with 1 additional day at Khongor sang dunes, Kharkhorin and Lake Khurvsgul)). I am so glad for the additional days as it allowed us to spent more time to these spots as opposed to constant travelling. I have been to many places and would highly recommend Mongolia. It reminds me very much of New Zealand where you have vast lands, more animals than people and very scenic. But you get to see and experience difference things from what you get at New Zealand...
