The cuisine of Mongolia is referred to as the Five Snouts – the basis for both the food of the country and much of its agriculture. These are horses, sheep, goats, camels and yaks, all of which are used in traditional dishes. Yak milk is also a common part of the diet, used to make soups and curds as well as cheese. Cooking is done over a barbecue known as a khorkhog, where a pot is placed on burning rocks over a fire.

Another traditional dish is called buuz, a type of dumpling made from dough and filled with mutton or beef.
