Day 1. Arrive in Mongolia

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. You'll be greeted at the airport and escorted to 4* hotel.

After lunch, take a half-day city tour including a visit to the dinosaur skeletons at the National Museum of Mongolian History and an excursion to the Zaisan Hill War Memorial to get your bearings with a panoramic view of the whole city.

Day 2. Tour to Arkhangai province

Tour to Arkhangai province will be quite exciting with an exploration of attractive landscape composing of mountains, forest, grassland, and rivers.

Day 3. Drive to Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and Horgo extinct volcano crater

Continue on the tour to Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and arrive at tourist camp. Small presentation.

Day 4. Discover volcano area

Today is to explore Horgo extinct volcano crater and Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake – a great spot for bird watching and fishing.

Day 5. Drive to Choidogin Borigo

Choidogin Borigo: an exciting place situated near the Chuluut and Suman rivers with a small waterfall, wherein spring many fish gather. Explore local flora and fauna.

Day 6. Taikhar rock

Today’s spot is the Taikhar rock - a unique rock that is situated in plain land. Once here you can walk around exploring the river, natural landscape, and wildlife – a great place for photos.

Day 7. Tsenkher hot spa

Drive to Tsetserleg, the capital of Arkhangai province, where you are free to explore the local town and museum. Then drive to Tsenkher hot spa, which reaches up to +80 C degrees and you have the chance to bathe under the sky.

Day 8. Elsen tsarkhai and visit a nomad family

Drive to the Elsen Tasarkhai - a unique area combining forest and sand dunes, where our tourist camp is situated. In the afternoon, visit a nomad family and experience their way of life, culture, and traditions.

Day 9. Kharkhorin and Erdene-Zuu

Today’s destination is the symbolic ruins of Kharkhorin, which was the capital city of the Great Mongol Empire founded in the 13th century by Genghis Khan. You will also visit the oldest Monastery Erdene-Zuu built in 1586, with 108 stupas.

Day 10. Middle Gobi

Driving through Middle Gobi should provide a wealth of diverse wildlife, nature and historical places. The Ongi Monastery ruin is one of the oldest monasteries in the desert, over 200 years old, and is situated on the bank of the Ongi River.

Day 11. Dinosaur’s land

Today we will explore Bayanzag – the biggest Saxaul forest and the Flaming Cliffs, the archaeological place where Roy Andrew Chapman discovered fossilized dinosaurs’ skeletons and eggs in the 1920s. In the late afternoon, you will arrive at Khongoryn Els sand dunes.

Day 12. Bactrian camel

Enjoy the real life of a camel herdsman family, pasturing camels through nature and wildlife, while driving through the South Gobi

Day 13. Eagle valley

Trip to Yol Am canyon (Eagle Valley) – a wonderfully picturesque place, with ice even in summer and it is surrounded by sheer rocky walls, forming incredible canyons. Visit the Gobi museum.

Day 14. Fly back Ulaanbaatar and city tour options

After breakfast, you will fly back to Ulaanbaatar. As an optional city tour, you will be taken to souvenir and cashmere shops and in the evening you can enjoy a National Folklore concert.

Day 15. Departure from Mongolia

You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport. (B)

Good to know

  • The best time to make this trip
    May to September is the best season, with the peak season in July for the Naadam Festival. July and August are also the wettest months of the year but be assured, our climate is such that you will still have many sunny days at this time. The best time to visit the Gobi is June or September.
     
  • Accommodation:
    We believe that comfortable, welcoming accommodation is vital to the enjoyment of your trip. You will be staying in a standard 3-4 star hotel in Ulaanbaatar and a tourist ger camp (traditional dwelling) with currency (220V), shower and other useful services (2 to 4 people per ger) in the countryside. All accommodation offered by Discover Mongolia is personally checked by our staff to ensure high standards.
     
  • ​Meals:
    In Ulaanbaatar, you will be dining at fine European and Asian cuisine restaurants. Mutton, beef, rice, and noodles form the basis of the Mongolian diet, so your meals will be based around this. However, the trail rations may include vegetables, eggs, peanut butter, cheese and sometimes yak! On some days there will be lunchboxes from tourist camps. It is good food and our experience has been that guests are happy with this arrangement. Please let us know in advance if you are a vegetarian. Alcohol is not provided on the trip but tourists are free to bring their own.
     
  • ​Transport:
    Discover Mongolia use the highest level, latest model, air-conditioned private vans or 4WD vehicles for the maximum comfort on your touring days. A day's drive in the countryside will be approx 200-250km.
     
  • ​Personal things to bring with you:
    Warm thin layers of clothing are the best such as bring a waterproof jacket, and a hat and headscarf to protect you from the sun and winds. Don't forget insect repellent, sun cream, lip-gloss, water purifying tablets and first aid kit (medicine for headache, cold, diarrhea, runny nose; bandages; any medicine prescribed for you ).
