Mongolia Dinosaur Tour

The red cliffs were on the sea bottom in ancient times, and still have petrified bones and eggs of dinosaurs from 60 million years ago. Of the twelve species of predatory dinosaurs, eight of them were found in Mongolia – the most famous discovery being made by Roy Chapman Andrews in the 1920s who dug up the remains of two dinosaurs who had fought each other to death. Our tour takes you to the cliffs and to see the remains found so far – an amazing experience to tell your friends back home.

Tour itinerary

Day 1. Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. You will be greeted at the airport and transferred to hotel. After lunch take a city tour including a visit to the dinosaur exhibitions hall at the Natural History Museum and Bogd Khan Palace, a series of beautiful traditional buildings where the last religious King of Mongolia resided. Dinner and overnight in the hotel. (L+D)

Day 2. Fly to South Gobi and visit Eagle valley
Up early for a flight to the capital of the South Gobi aimag, Dalanzadgad. The flight takes one and a half hours, and on arrival at the airstrip in the Gobi a local driver will meet you and take you to Yolyn Am, or ‘Eagle Valley’. Take a trip to Yol Am – a wonderfully picturesque place with ice even in summer, and surrounded by sheer rocky walls, forming incredible canyons. Visit Gobi museum. These areas are situated in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park that encompasses the "Three Beauties" peaks and the most easterly points of the Altai Mountains. Overnight in tourist camp. (B+L+D)

Day 3. Mongolian largest sand dunes
After breakfast at the camp you will be driven to Khongor Sand Dune. These are Mongolia's largest sand dunes, reaching a height of 300 meters in some areas. The sand dunes change color with each hour of the day, from yellow to silver to rose-colored at (dawn/ sundown). Overnight in tourist camp. (B+L+D)

Day 4. Discover Gobi wildlife
Drive to Narandaats, a beautiful paradise where saxual trees, tooroi, and khailaas grow to such heights that one is reminded that they existed many hundreds of thousand of years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the Gobi plains. Overnight in tent. (B+L+D)

Day 5. Drive to Khermen Tsav Canyon
In the morning we will drive to Khermen Tsav Canyon, which was made from thousands of year’s erosion of red sand and which stretches for about 10 km in the Gobi Desert. The area has desert plants and trees and many fossilized remains of ancient animals and dinosaurs. We will have time to walk through the center of the canyon and explore the fascinating plant species and rock formations. Overnight in tent. (B+L+D)

Day 6. Free relaxing and Camel ride through sand dunes
Today you will be riding on camels to explore the Khongor Sand Dunes. The two-humped Bactrian camels are very comfortable to ride as they walk slowly and gently, and you will be well supported by the humps, sitting comfortably between them. Our camel man will lead you safely through the sand dunes. Plus, you will have an opportunity to visit a camel herdsman’s family to discover their way of life, their culture and traditions. Overnight in tourist camp. (B+L+D)

Day 7. Explore dinosaur’s land
Drive to Tugrigiin Shiree site, famous for the “Fighting Dinosaurs,” a fossil of a Protoceratops and a Velociraptor locked in combat. Also, visit the legendary “Flaming Cliffs,” where, in 1922, the first nest of dinosaur eggs the world had ever seen was discovered. Overnight in tourist camp. (B+L+D)

Day 8. Fly back to Ulaanbaatar and city tour options
After breakfast will have a flight back to Ulaanbaatar. You may choose an optional city tour where you will be taken to souvenir and cashmere shops before enjoying an evening concert of National Folklore. Then a farewell dinner and overnight at the hotel. (B+L+D)

Day 9. Departure back Mongolia
You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport. (B)

The Gobi desert

Many thanks for another wonderful Mongolian holiday. To visit this land of the ancient dinosaurs, to see with my own eyes their petrified eggs and bones – it’s something worth experiencing personally. . .
