Mongolia Fishing Tour for Taimen

Fishing in Mongolia is a wonderful experience. We have over 4000 rivers and more than 30 lakes - all totally unspoilt and unpolluted, and a fabulous place to catch a wide variety of fish. Although many of them are similar varieties to those found in European rivers, Mongolian fish are much bigger and more abundant – much more satisfying for a day at the river! The Taimen, the largest fish in the salmon family, is a real challenge to catch – try your luck on this tour! The average taimen is around 33 inches and weighs roughly 10 pounds, however, there will be multiple chances every day to try catching fish over 50 inches. Siberian White Fish, Siberian Grayling, Lenok, Umber, Baikal, Omul and River Perch are among the other varieties you will catch among the spectacular scenery of Mongolia 's exotic nature.

You will stay at a fishing camp on the river Onon in the eastern region of Mongolia. The fishing area in the campground extends about 10-15 km along the river and the surrounding area is sparsely populated, with the exception of a few nomadic dwellings. The peaceful environment offers a perfect opportunity to escape the tension of the city and just relax and unwind.

Onon River Fishing Mongolia

The fishing season lasts from about August 20th till October 20th. During this period, there is no rain and water is usually transparent and at a low level, enabling the best catch. June 15th to July 5th is also possible as the water level is normal, however there is occasional rain.

We don't teach you how to catch fish, we just show you where to fish.

Tour itinerary

Day 1. Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar , the capital city of Mongolia. You will be greeted at the airport and transfer red to the hotel. After lunch you have a half-day city tour including a visit to the fish hall at the National History Museum and visiting souvenir and cashmere shops. Dinner and overnight in the hotel. (L+D)

Day 2. Tour to Onon river, prepare for the fishing
After breakfast, we will have a full day drive to Onon river, eastern region of Mongolia which will be quite exciting with exploration of attractive landscape composing of mountains, forest, grassland and rivers. Overnight in tourist camp near Onon River. (B+L+D)

Day 3. Fishing in Onon river
Drive about 50 km along to Onon and fishing at confluence of Onon and Barkh River . Onon is one of the biggest rivers abundant with fishes. It begins from Khan Khentii Mountain range and flows 800 km on Mongolian territories and flows into Shilka river, one of biggest rivers in Eurasia. Picnic lunch. Dinner and overnight in tourist camp. Day 4. Drive to fishing ger lodge “Balj” and fishing
After breakfast at the camp we will drive about 60 km to our fishing lodge to catch Taimen. The lodge is located in bank of Balj river which flows into Onon river. Overnight in the fishing ger lodge (B+L+D)

Days 5-6. Fishing days at Balj river
2 days fishing in Balj River. Overnight in the fishing lodge. (B+L+D)

Day 7. Back to tourist camp and fishing
Up early morning drive back to tourist camp, shower and relax. Then fishing in Onon river. (B+L+D)

Day 8-9. Fishing in Onon river
2 days fishing in Onon river. Overnight in the tourist ger camp. (B+L+D)

Day 10. Drive back to Ulaanbaatar and city tour options
After breakfast, we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar. Check in hotel. In the evening you can attend a concert performance of national folklore before having a farewell dinner and overnight in the hotel. (B+L+D)

Day 11. Departure back Mongolia
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred from your hotel to the airport. (B)
